About Us

The Great Heresy Theater Company was founded in 2008 by Minneapolis writer Sarah Wash and a dedicated group of actors and designers who produced an original adaptation of Bruno Schulz’s The Street of Crocodiles. You can read more about their endeavors on the Street of Crocodiles archive page.

The name The Great Heresy Theater Company was derived in part from Schulz’s last unfinished novel, The Regions of Great Heresy, and in part as a means of bringing a form of cultural discourse to the Twin Cities theater community that is, in a word, heretical: willing to challenge cultural, formal, social, religious, and other orthodoxies in the pursuit of a more open dialogue about aesthetic and meaning. Put simply, we’re not afraid to go there, and when we do, we bring back both trash and treasure, dump it out all over the stage, and see what we can assemble from what we’ve found. Come share in our experiments–you’ll be glad you did.
